Christmas is THAT time of the year when everything feels magical. From getting cozy on a couch with Christmas movies and a mug of hot chocolate, to going out and celebrating another year of friendship and happiness. Everyone has their favorite rituals for this particular holiday. Well, maybe not everyone, because some celebrities don’t like – or even hate – Christmas.
From Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga to Hugh Grant, some celebrities have sworn to be Christmas Scrooges, and they have airtight defenses for loathing this cherished holiday season.
Celebrities don’t hate the Christmas spirit
In a world of diverse cultures and hundreds of holidays, Christmas has been that one holiday where the world seems to take a pause. Everyone embraces their favorite traditions with family and friends.
But even Santa Claus could not win over these celebrities. Grammy-winning music legend Lady Gaga is one such star who is vocal about not liking Christmas, so much so, she was once seen biting a toy Santa Claus’s head at a concert in 2010.
Surprisingly, she isn’t even the only one on this list.
Miley Cyrus
Former Disney star Miley Cyrus is definitely a rebel (with a cause) and her reason for not liking Christmas has resonated with many fans. The singer did not hold back from sharing how festive seasons can make you feel lonely.
To help fans, the Hannah Montana star released a heart-wrenching song, My Sad Christmas, and penned a letter.
“A sad Christmas song I wrote a few years back right before the holidays,” Cyrus shared on Instagram.
“Was feeling like s–t cause I couldn’t be with the one I loved. Even with a house full of family and friends I still felt alone. In ways that still feels relevant and someone reading this right now could possibly relate!”
She added: “If you feel lonely this season just know YOU ARE COMPLETELY MADE OF MAGIC! You are as special as a snowflake, beautifully unique and I hope inside your soul feels light, hope, peace, and joy knowing how singularly amazing YOU are! Love always wins!”
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga’s ‘unhinged’ way of expressing her true feelings towards Christmas will live on the Internet’s forever. The 37-year-old hitmaker was performing at a London concert right before Christmas, where she ‘kills’ a Santa doll on stage.
“I hate the holidays. I’m alone and miserable you f – – king stuffed little toy,” she told her fans from the stage before throwing the Santa doll to the audience.
The Shallow crooner may have broken a few hearts with her vehement hatred for the holidays, but some fans could relate to the emotion behind it.
Jennifer Aniston
Friends star Jennifer Aniston’s Christmas memories are not all jolly, which might have caused her mild resentment towards the holiday. Everyone has different pasts, so it’s no surprise she’s one of the celebrities who may hate Christmas because of an annoying tradition.
She revealed in an interview in 2016: “When I was a kid, they used to make me belly dance. On Christmas Eve.”
“My dad’s whole side of the family is Greek, so I would dress up as a little Greek girl and then on Christmas, after taking belly-dancing classes, I would do that. It had nothing to do with Christmas, even. It was just, ‘Let’s humiliate Jen on Christmas,” the TV star told Entertainment Weekly.
Hugh Grant
British movie star Hugh Grant not only loathes Christmas but also makes an active effort to avoid it at all costs.
The 63-year-old actor once confessed: “I can’t pretend to really be into the holiday season. For the last several years I managed to avoid it. I have even arranged to be working in Muslim countries to escape it.”
This is hard to believe, as the actor has been celebrated for starring in a fan-favorite Christmas film. He played the Prime Minister in Love Actually, a feel-good movie people sit down to watch every December. Not only that, but another flick – which isn’t a holiday movie but, like Die Hard, is up there on the list – Bridget Jones is also put on a Christmas movie pedestal.
Melania Trump
The former first lady of the White House aka Melania Trump once shared how much she doesn’t like how Christmas also comes with a lot of pressure. She may not be part of the full list of celebrities who hate Christmas, but she definitely didn’t like decorating.
In one recording, Melania was heard ranting about having to decorate the White House.
In a viral leaked audio, the 53-year-old former fashion model could be heard saying: “I’m working … my a** off on the Christmas stuff, that you know.”
She tells advisor Stephanie Winston Wolkoff: “Who gives a f**k about the Christmas stuff and decorations? But I need to do it, right?”
Melania goes on: “OK, and then I do it and I say that I’m working on Christmas and planning for the Christmas and they said, ‘Oh, what about the children that they were separated?’ Give me a f****** break.”
