Matt Damon and Ben Affleck snagged their first Oscar for their brilliant screenplay of Goodwill Hunting in 1998. While the cast looked equally thrilled when Ben and Matt delivered their Oscar speech, one star of the movie looked ‘devastated.’ Decades after, the celebrity is ready to spill what exactly went wrong on the special night of their career.
The 1997 film Good Will Hunting was a cultural moment for Hollywood. The movie featured Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård, and Minnie Driver in the main cast and gained nominations in nine categories of Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Director) and won two: Best Supporting Actor for Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Affleck and Damon.

Good Will Hunting star Minnie Driver recalls famous Oscar night, “I was devastated”
Actress Minnie Driver is taking a trip down memory lane and fans love it. Recently, the 53-year-old celebrity commented on an Instagram post where Damon and Affleck are gushing over their big win. The camera also pans to Minnie as Ben gives a shoutout to the star saying, “Minnie Driver, whose performance was brilliant.”
The actress admits that she looked sad in the clip, explaining, “Matt had ended our relationship a few weeks before this, and was at the Oscars with his new [girlfriend]…I was devastated.”
The TV star regrets her expression as she tells fans, “Wish I could have celebrated more as it was an amazing moment for all of us, and for this wonderful film!”

Inside Matt Damon and Minnie Driver’s relationship
Minnie Driver has not held back talking about her relationship with Matt Damon, which ended in 1998. The couple got together while filming for Good Will Hunting and, as per Minnie, the relationship and its aftermath could only be called, “a strange, surreal dream.”
Two decades later, Minnie shared what went wrong between the two within in such a short space of time, claiming that fame played a huge part.
“My family loved Matt. It wasn’t that,” she said. “It was that they could see that this young man was rocketing really fast and so was I. And when you’re young, it’s pretty hard to keep your head on straight and to maintain a grounded sense of deportment. They were like, ‘This may well end badly for reasons that are to do with all these things coming together in a perfect storm.'”
The celebrity couple‘s breakup was pretty public, as Matt shared the details of his relationship status on The Oprah Winfrey Show in January of 1998 revealing: “Well, I’m single.”
“I was with Minnie for a while, but we’re not really romantically involved anymore. We’re just really good friends, and I love her dearly….I care about her a lot. We care about each other a lot. It wasn’t meant to be, you know? And if it’s not meant to be, then it’s not meant to be.”
Matt’s frank confession did not make Minnie happy as, months later, she told Los Angeles Times, “It’s unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah; it seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate.
“Of course, he was busy declaring his love for me on David Letterman a month previously.”
